Why is Baptism important?
Baptism is the first sacrament of belonging to God’s family, the Church. Through Baptism, your child becomes a beloved son or daughter of God in a new way and begins their journey of faith. Baptism is also the gateway to the other sacraments and a child must be baptized in order to receive First Communion, Confirmation, and the other sacraments.
Why are we being invited now?
Sometimes life is busy, and Baptism may not have happened when children were infants. This year, we are especially inviting families with children in JK, SK, or Grade 1 to prepare for and celebrate Baptism together in a joyful and welcoming way.
What if my child is older than Grade 1?
You are still welcome! Please contact the parish office. We will guide you through the best path for your child’s preparation.
What happens at the Family Retreat?
The retreat is a half-day experience with activities for parents and children. Parents will receive encouragement and guidance to help them prepare their child and themselves for the Sacrament of Baptism, while children enjoy age-appropriate activities that introduce them to God’s love and the meaning of Baptism.
Who should come to the retreat?
The retreat is intended for the parents or guardians and the child who will be baptized. We prefer that only the participating child attend, but we understand that sometimes this is not possible—siblings are welcome if needed.
What should my child wear for the Baptism celebration?
While babies are often dressed in all-white outfits for Baptism, this is not required. Children may wear neat, comfortable clothing suitable for a special occasion or Sunday best—there’s no need to be overly fancy. During the ceremony, your child will also be given a special white garment, which symbolizes new life in Christ and their welcome into God’s family.
What if I feel nervous or unsure about coming?
You are not alone. Many parents feel this way. Please know that you and your child are welcome just as you are. This is a time of encouragement, healing, and celebration—not judgment.
What is the cost?
There is no cost to families. Baptism is a gift of grace.
